What is SEO?

Search Engine Optimisation (SEO) is the process of increasing the visibility of a website or a web page to the users of a web search engine so as to boost its organic traffic.

This process is done through optimisation of the content, such as having keywords, good website structure, images and text. This improves the ranking of the website in the search engine results page, such as Google, Yahoo and Bing.

Improved search rankings drive organic traffic to your website. Below is an example of an organic search result:

How SEO Works

Search engines have a software called ‘spiders’ which crawls your website to gather information, which it will use to index the page–meaning it keeps the data of the page in a database.

Whenever a search query comes up, the ‘spider’ will match the keywords in the search query to the pages of data in the database. The pages that best match the query will appear at the top of your Search Engine Result Page (otherwise known as SERP).

Why SEO is Important for Business

Most businesses are going digital in today’s competitive marketing landscape. If you have a website or online store, you would want it to rank highly in the SERP. Higher visibility on the SERP generally translates to higher sale.

SEO results takes time and effort–it is a long-term marketing strategy, as compared to paid advertisements which are short-term.

Most business owners may then say:

“Well, I can just rely on paid advertisements. It gives me results much faster.”

While using paid advertisement, or Search Engine Marketing (SEM), brings in traffic quickly, it should be used in tandem with organic SEO for more effective results.
